Description

Illam falls under one of the most visited places in Nepal. Many domestic and international tourists visit Illam every year to enjoy the mesmerizing scenery of the tea garden as well as other viewpoints. Illam is 700km east from Kathmandu. It lies in the Hilly Region. Illam district comes under Province No.1 of Nepal covering 1,703 sq.km. Illam district got its name from the Limbu language in which "Ii" means twisted and "Lam" means road.  It was one of the ten self-ruling states of Limbuwan before the reunification of Nepal. The ruler king, King Hangshu Phuba Kingdom of Kingdom dynasty ruled Illam as a confederate state of Limbuwan until 1813 AD. Illam was an independent Limbu kingdom until 1869 BS. Ilam reflects the rich social and cultural heritage of people who have been living in harmony. Major ethnic groups living in Illam are Brahmins and Chettris, Magars, Gurungs, Rais, Limbus, and Sherpas.

Illam has set its name to one of the most developed places in Nepal. The most famous thing in Illam is Illam tea. Ilam is also known as The Kingdom of Tea Production. Ilam tea is very famous and is exported to many parts of Europe. The main source of income in Illam is tea, cardamom, milk, ginger, potato, onion, and broom which is produced here on a large scale. Illam is also famous for five A’s: Aalu (Potato), Aalaichi(Cardamom), Aduwa(Ginger), Akabare Khursani(red chilly), and Amriso(the raw material used in making broom).

Taplejung district also falls under one of the 14 districts of Province no.1 of Nepal. This district covers 1,401 sq. km. Taplejung is the district headquarters. Taplejung is connected from 227-km Char Aali-Ilam-Phidim-Taplejung road which meets the East-West Highway at Char Aali. After visiting Illam, people most likely visit Taplejung the other day.

One of the most popular religious sites in Illam is the Pathibhara temple. People usually get confused as the Pathibhara temple is also located in the Taplejung district. These are two different temples lying in different districts. Both temples are believed to be the sisters and the one present at Illam is believed to be the younger sister of the Pathibhara Devi temple in Taplejung. This temple is also called as ‘Sano Pathibhara temple’. The devotees visit the temple with prayers and they make resolutions also known as Bhakal in the Nepali language and offer the goddess with different things. The temple is located in Hanspokhari on the southeast of Kolbung VDC, on the way to Illam on Mechi highway.

Along with the Pathibhara temple, the other temple named Gajurmukhi temple is also located at the altitude of 500m in Illam. People come to Illam to visit this temple also. There is a stone cave that is inscribed with the images of the Hindu deities in this temple which is about four hours hike from Illam Bazaar.
