The Upper Mustang area was a restricted demilitarized area until 1992 making it one of the most preserved regions in the world. With a majority of the population still speaking traditional Tibetan languages, Tibetan culture has been preserved by the relative isolation of the region from the outside world. Life in Mustang revolves around tourism, animal husbandry, and trade. The Upper Mustang comprises the northern two-thirds of Mustang District of Gandaki Pradesh, Nepal. It consists of three rural municipalities namely Lo Manthang, Dalome, and Baragung Muktichhetra.

Upper Mustang was opened to non-Nepali trekkers only from 1992 and even today, access is still highly restricted. To enter Upper Mustang, that is to travel further north of Kagbeni, trekkers need special trekking permit and must be accompanied by a government-appointed official. The early history of Lomanthang is embellished in myths and legends rather than the recorded facts.

April-May is a great time to visit Upper Mustang when we trek from Lower Mustang as the weather will be warmer and the rivers full of snowmelt in the lower regions. The middle of May is also the time of the Tiji Festival at Lo-Manthang.  This festival lasts for 3 days and makes it more reasonable to come in May. Temperatures at this time of year are generally between 16-22 degrees Celsius. It is possible to trek to Upper Mustang in the monsoon season but the possibility is that the path will be quite slippery and wet. But once we reach the top of Upper Mustang, you’ll experience a whole new world up there.
